मातमी माहौल में भी महिला पत्रकार के साथ छेड़छाड़ से बाज नहीं आये शैतान

खबर थी कि तुम चली जाओगी. हम मातम में डूबे थे और हमारे ठीक पीछे हैवान खड़ा था. हम मातम में थे और वह नयी हैवानियत की सोंच रहा था.

भीड़ का हिस्सा बन तुम जैसी किसी और को तलाशने आया था. उसके लिए यह एक मजेदार इवेंट था और इस इवेंट का वह पूरा लुत्फ़ उठा लेना चाहता था.

उसके अंदर का जानवर सक्रिय था लेकिन भीड़ देखकर किसी कोने में दुबका पड़ा था. लेकिन उसी कोने से उछल – उछल के तुम जैसे किसी को मसलने के लिए मचल जाता था.

लेकिन भीड़ देखकर रुक जाता था.

दुष्कर्म पीड़ित अनामी लड़की अब ख़ाक भी हो चुकी है. उसकी चिता की राख अभी ठंढी भी नहीं हुई और दरिंदे नयी दरिंदगी के लिए शिकार तलाशने लगे हैं.

जंतर – मंतर पर लोग मातम में पहुंचे थे. संवेदना प्रकट कर रहे थे. शोक संतप्त थे. लेकिन उस भीड़ में कुछ निगाहें स्त्री देह को तलाश रही थी.

दिल्ली की मुख्यमंत्री शीला दीक्षित आयी तो भीड़ ने उन्हें एक तरह से खदेड़ दिया. लेकिन इस भागमभागी में कई महिलाओं के साथ बदतमीजी हुई. उन्हीं में से एक महिला पत्रकार भी थी जो पूरी घटना की तस्वीर अपने कैमरे में कैद कर रही थी.

लेकिन इस भागमभागी और भीड़ - भड़क्के का फायदा उठाते हुए कोई हैवान बार – बार उस महिला को छूने की कोशिश कर रहा है. उस महिला पत्रकार ने इसपर ट्विट किया है और आज टाइम्स ऑफ इंडिया ने इसपर खबर की है.

सवाल उठता है कि इतनी भीड़ – भाड़ और ऐसे मातमी माहौल में भी जो ऐसी हरकत कर सकता है, अकेली स्त्री और सूनसान जगह देखकर वह किस हैवानियत पर उतर सकता है. यह हम देख चुके हैं. जरूरी है कि हम अपनी आँखें खुली रखें और अपने आसपास हो रही गतिविधि पर नज़र रखें. तभी ऐसी घटनाएं रूकेंगी.

इसके पहले भी एक महिला टीवी पत्रकार के साथ छेड़छाड की घटना घटी थी.

This is not for a moment to distract from Nirbhaya. It is only to say that we have a long, long way to go before women feel safe in India. I was groped while covering the protests at Jantar Mantar on Saturday.

I reached Jantar Mantar around 1pm. There were three large camps of more organized protesters, and then dozens of scattered ones. There were female college students, some older women and a few families, but overall, the crowd was overwhelmingly male. I went from group to group taking pictures and talking to some protesters.

Around 2pm, there was a commotion near the barricades and I saw Sheila Dikshit come in. Immediately, more than 100 protesters - almost all of them male - rushed towards her, booing and heckling her. Protesters formed a ring around the police who were shielding her, and journalists rushed in. It was a mad scramble, but of the sort journalists are used to. I raised my camera above my head and started taking pictures.

Within a few seconds, I felt a hand on my behind. I tried to give the person the benefit of doubt by elbowing his arm and twisting around to dislodge his hand, while still taking pictures. But when I knew I was unmistakably being groped, I caught the guy by the arm.

He looked around 25 and had no camera, placards or banners with him. I hit him on the arm a couple of times and gave him a shove, asking him what he was doing and telling him to get away from me. He pretended not to hear and stared straight ahead. I yelled at him some more, hit him on the arm again and a few men in front of me turned around. He slunk off.

The whirlwind around Sheila Dikshit moved closer to the barricades, I took some more photos, and she left. I moved away from the protesters and told a friend, another female journalist, what had happened. I described him to her and we looked around at the crowd but couldn't spot him. I didn't think it was a big enough incident to make a police complaint.

I tweeted about the episode and was inundated with support, which I appreciate. Yet, there were a few men who suggested that I must have enjoyed it, and several others who thought I was doing it for "publicity" or to help one party or the other.

I'm not saying all the protesters at Jantar Mantar behaved badly because they didn't. But I will say that we have a lot of work to do in creating a culture of gender equality, which is the only real protection against street sexual harassment of this sort.
